8th Annual Southern California Transportation Summit
Dates: Sep 21

Southern California is at a crossroads. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape our transportation future, escape gridlock, protect our environment and improve our quality of life. However, without champions for transportation in the state and federal legislatures, and without a vision of how we can achieve this 21st century transportation network, we will be left with a system that does not meet our needs. Sustainable, innovative solutions are on the horizon, funding reforms are being considered and regional cooperation is improving the way our transportation network serves residents and commerce alike. What’s missing is a groundswell of support for investing the needed capital and the flexibility for implementing these innovations. On September 21, 2009 join transportation providers, businesses, elected o;cials and others to develop Mobility 21’s action plan to advocate for Southern California’s transportation future in Sacramento and Washington, D.C.

Which Way UCLA and the VA?
Dates: Sep 18

Hosted by Westside Urban Forum at The Regency Club, 10900 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood, CA

Zocalo:
Dates: Sep 16

Traffic can seem like a law of the universe: an ever-present, incontrovertible, inexplicable force. Back-ups simply happen, the other lanes always move faster, and nearby drivers are consistently inept. But traffic has a comprehensible logic — particular physical dynamics rule the flow of cars; psychology governs drivers’ assumptions and actions; and laws and technology underpin attempts at efficiency and safety on the road. Tom Vanderbilt, author of Traffic: Why We Drive The Way We Do and What It Says About Us, visits Zócalo to explore how human nature, our relationship to our built urban environment, and a host of other complex physical, psychological, and social interactions create the phenomenon of traffic.

"Green" Taxes and Fees
Dates: Feb 23

A Politically Way to Increase Revenue Jennifer Dill talks about "green" taxes on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm in Public Affairs 2333. This approach adapts the traditional transportation finance system to achieve two critical public benefits at once: encouraging drivers to choose more sustainable travel options at the same time as raising revenue for needed transportation programs.

IIID Expert Forum Traffic Guiding Systems 2008
Dates: Sep 4 - 5

The effectiveness of public transport often depends on how long it takes to change between different
modes of transport. This can become even more critical when it comes to transferring from long- to
short-distance transport networks and vice versa. If "inter-connectivity" between transport networks is
to be enhanced, measures focusing on improving "INFOconnectivity" between transport networks and
their customers are indispensable. Highest possible effects in accelerating passenger transfers may be
expected by introducing the concept of "intertwined information" of and between transport networks.

The Expert Forum Traffic Guiding Systems serves the shared interests of designers/planners, researchers, educators, suppliers, essential users, transport authorities and the public hand that carries most of the costs of public transport networks.

SFMTA - Advancing Underground
Dates: Jun 18

Shoehorning transit into the heart of a major city is never easy. But it must be done. With the $1.4 billion, 5.1-mile Central Subway Project, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Executive Director Nathaniel Ford and SFMTA Deputy General Manager Carter Rohan know first hand how challenging it can be.

The second phase of the Third Street Light Rail Project, Central Subway is "vital to connecting the city's civic, business and cultural centers with the diverse communities along the corridor." Improving service reliability and travel times, the project also promises to provide economic opportunities locally and regionally. And on June 18th, SFMTA Executive Director Ford and SFMTA Deputy General Manager Carter will enlighten WTS-LA members as to their challenges and progress in making Central Subway a reality.

Shoehorning transit into San Francisco can't be easy. But somebody's got to do it. Join us on June 18th and meet two people who are doing it right now.

Optimization of maintenance and replacement policies for a system of
Dates: Apr 25

This research addresses the determination of optimal maintenance and replacement policies for a system of heterogeneous facilities. The problem of optimizing maintenance and replacement policies at the system level is formulated in a reliability-based framework, based on policies that are optimal at the facility level. The facility-level policies are determined using a finite-state, finite horizon Markov decision process in which the state of the Markov chain contains information on the history of maintenance and deterioration.

Optimality conditions for the continuous-case system-level problem are derived and explained intuitively. A numerical study shows that the results obtained in the discrete-case implementation of the solution are valid approximations of the continuous-case results. The computational efficiency of the system-level solution makes the formulation suitable for systems of realistic sizes.

Greetings, Transporters:

So, I’m the new Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS)- Los Angeles campus liaison. I’ll be alerting you all about upcoming events and funding opportunities. Feel free to get in touch with me if you ever have any questions.

There’s a reception and lunch coming up on Tuesday, April 24 with folks from the Port of Los Angeles . Although the student rate is a bit high, I’m told that they’re working to get corporate sponsorship to cover the registration fee for student attendees. If you’re interested in attending, I’d suggest you RSVP as soon as possible. Some information about the event is below, and more details are in the .pdf attachment. (I never thought I’d see something that connected Hollywood , dreams, and port activity, but there it is.)

WTS events are a great way to network with transportation folks working in both the public and private sectors. I’d encourage you to attend – if not this event, then one in the future.

Thanks,
Camille

The Cable Car Meets the Freeway: A North-South Exchange
Dates: Dec 8

Popular lore holds that California's two most prominent cities define two faces of California--the dense old world in the north and the auto-metropolis in the south. But it's easy to focus on icons that belie the true nature of their urban fabric when, in fact, these two great cities share so much. Both are struggling to balance growth, affordability and livability; civic identity with regionalism; and local ambitions with state rules that complicate financing and often favor sprawl over density. And both are learning from each other as they lead California into the 21st century.

Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Conference
Dates: Feb 22 - 24

Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Conference (February 22-24, 2005, La Quinta, California) – The annual Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Conference has become the key “go-to” destination for the latest developments in new technologies for the heavy-duty industry, from natural gas, hydrogen, and other alternative fuels, to advanced diesel technologies, hybrids, fuel cells, emissions reduction and fuel efficiency technologies. The 2005 Conference focuses on the connection among emission, fuel efficiency, and energy security. In the past decade, the United States, as well as the rest of the world, has engaged in an ongoing struggle with the multi-headed Medusa of energy over-consumption and dwindling oil supplies, battles over domestic oil supplies and battles to secure foreign oil, greenhouse gases and global warming, gas guzzling vehicles and fuel efficiency. What are the potential solutions to move us away from the existing “transportation as usual” attitude and into a cleaner, more efficient and secure energy paradigm? This is what Clean Heavy Duty Vehicle 2005: Making the Connection: Emissions, Efficiency and Energy Security seeks to address in two days of insightful sessions.
