UCLA ITS Book Club
Starting in fall 2024, the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies will host a quarterly book club for alumni and students to participate. We will hold a virtual forum to discuss findings and lessons learned from the selected reading material, along with a virtual book talk with the author at the end of the quarter.
We will also have a handful of books available in the UCLA ITS suite for students to borrow.
If you’re interested in receiving information about upcoming book club events, fill out this form.
Please join our GoodReads group to view the discussion boards for the latest books we’re reading.

About the Book
In this book, Susan Handy takes a critical look at the way of thinking that, for the last century, has shaped our transportation system, especially the network of roadways on which we all depend. While many recent books have advocated for a new approach to transportation, Handy’s goal is to peel back the layers of these arguments to examine the ideas at the core of the traditional way of thinking about transportation and consider the ways in which these ideas are now shifting. She considers nine core ideas in turn, examining their roots, their implications, and the evolution of their influence in the transportation profession. She shows how these ideas are evolving in a way that could set our transportation system on a radically different course over the coming decades.
