How Slow Are Slow Streets? Countermeasure Effectiveness at Reducing Vehicle Speeds on Los Angeles Slow Streets

Date: July 7, 2023

Author(s): Jackson Zeng

Abstract

Slow Streets began in 2020 initially using simple, low-cost signage and barricades to demarcate segments. As these materials wore out, LADOT was tasked with upgrading to a new set of traffic-calming measures, or countermeasures, on some of its Slow Streets using more durable materials such as signs, striping, and bollards. The researcher evaluated the effectiveness of the new countermeasures and the effectiveness of the program in general at reducing speeds.
